“When government fears the people, there is liberty. When the people fear the government, there is tyranny.” – Thomas Jefferson
According to Thomas Jefferson’s definitions of liberty and tyranny, it’s hard to argue that we’re not living under the latter. Does the government currently fear the people? Why should they?
Remember when Lois Lerner targeted Tea Party freedom activists as head of the IRS? She retired with a full pension and never bore any consuenquences for weaponizing her agency against ideological opponents.
The Biden administration felt emboldened enough to push a brazen lie in the form of the so-called Inflation Reduction Act, which includes a provision for hiring 87,000 new IRS agents. To quote Jefferson again, in his complaints against the Crown, “He has erected a multitude of New Offices, and sent hither swarms of Officers to harrass our people, and eat out their substance.”
The supersizing of the IRS has all the trademarks of encroaching tyranny. Beyond bogus claims that the new agents will “mostly provide customer service,” or that we need to spend $80 billion in order to raise $200 billion in new revenue, there is another sinister feature of the move to bolster the most reviled of all bureaucracies.
Ashley Varner of the Freedom Foundation joins me to discuss the perverse nature of public sector employee unions, which can lobby the government for direct pay raises – all at taxpayer expense. The Freedom Foundation is a “Do Tank” based in Washington State that is leading a national movement of workers who are opting out of their union dues.
By helping people leave their union, we’re putting dues back in their pockets and taking that money out of the left’s progressive machinery.” – FreedomFoundation.com
The IRS represents the single largest federal public sector union lobby, and 100% of its political contributions go to one party (guess which). Varner will explain how the vicious cycle of political privilege is perpetuated by public sector unions and their boosters in government.
We also discuss the unresolved IRS scandal of 2013, and the broader problem of public sector union influence – including the teachers union and their figurehead, Randi Weingarten.

Don't believe the White House's promises about who the new IRS will audit
(Lex Villena/Reason/Ron Sachs/UPI/Newscom) As the House of Representatives, as early as this afternoon, prepares to give the Internal Revenue Service the biggest single funding boost in its history, top Democrats have been busy escalating their already implausible claims that goosing the IRS enforcement budget by 69 percent over a decade, hiring 87,000 additional new staffers at an agency that currently employs 79,000, and nabbing an estimated extra $124 billion in tax revenue will miraculously not bring any percentage increase in audits performed on Americans earning less than $400,000 a year.
